What Is Girls Mentorship?

Girls Mentorship is a mentorship organization that teaches girls confidence, friendship skills and leadership as real, practiced skills. We create spaces where girls feel seen, supported and capable. Our tagline says it best: we help girls become bold leaders, confident friends and connected community members.

Jill and Mary met while working at lululemon, where they found a shared passion for mentorship. They started Girls Mentorship in August 2020 after seeing that girls still lacked the tools to handle the same struggles they'd faced 20 years earlier: low confidence, negative self-talk, poor self-image and anxiety. We get it because we've been there too.

The POWER Framework

Every Girls Mentorship program, from camp to coaching, is built on five pillars:

Perspective: Learning to recognize that how you see a situation shapes how you experience and respond to it.
Ownership: Taking responsibility for what's yours: your choices, words, actions and what you do next.
Worthiness: Knowing your value isn't determined by achievement, appearance, approval or belonging.
Empowerment: Trusting yourself enough to use your voice, make choices and take action.
Reassurance: Building the inner tools and support systems to stay grounded when life gets hard.

We make it comfortable to get a little uncomfortable. Confidence is built through action, not lectures.

How Girls Mentorship Is Different

Compared to a general summer day camp: General camps focus on activities and supervision. Girls Mentorship camp is built around a specific curriculum (POWER) that teaches confidence, friendship and leadership as skills, led by women mentors.

Compared to Girl Scouts: Girl Scouts is a year-round, badge-based troop program. Girls Mentorship is an intensive, conversation-based experience focused on the social and emotional side of growing up. Many of our girls do both, and we run workshops for Girl Scout troops.

Compared to sports or dance camps: Those build a physical skill. We build the inner skills that carry into every team, classroom and friend group: self-talk, speaking up, handling conflict and knowing her worth.

Compared to therapy or counseling: Therapy diagnoses and treats. We don't. Girls Mentorship is mentorship and skill-building for girls who are doing okay and want to thrive, or who need more support alongside professional care.

Compared to school SEL lessons: School SEL is broad and co-ed. Our programs are girls-only, small-group and led by mentors girls look up to, so they talk about what's really going on.

What Makes Girls Mentorship Different

Girls-only and age-specific. Campers 10 to 13, Peer Leaders 14 to 18, One-Days split by grade.
A real framework. Every program follows the POWER Framework, so skills build from camp to One-Days to coaching.
Founder-led. Jill and Mary lead camp and the Mastermind themselves.
Mentors, not lectures. Women mentors and high school Peer Leaders model what confident, kind leadership looks like.
A path for every age. A girl can start as a camper at 10 and grow into a Peer Leader at 14.
Arizona ESA approved. Families can use ESA funds for camp and the Peer Leader program.

Yes. Girls Mentorship is an approved Arizona ESA vendor. ESA funds can be used for summer camp and the Peer Leader program. Email [email protected] for an invoice to submit through ClassWallet.

My daughter is shy. Is camp right for her?

Yes. Camp isn't about fixing girls. Quiet girls and outgoing girls both come, and small groups, Secret Buddies and Peer Leaders help every girl feel included from day one.

My daughter is already confident. Will she still get something out of it?

Yes. Confident girls still face friendship drama, group chats, comparison and pressure. Camp gives her tools for those moments and a chance to practice leadership. Many confident campers go on to become Peer Leaders.

How can I help my daughter with friendship drama in middle school?

Start by helping her separate facts from the stories her brain fills in, and by practicing what to say before the hard moment comes. That's exactly what our POWER Framework teaches. For hands-on practice, Girls Mentorship camp and One-Days give girls 10 to 14 real conversations about friendships, group chats and conflict.

What can I do when my daughter's confidence fades after summer?

It's normal. The camp high wears off when school, friendships and self-doubt kick in, which means the tools need to be revisited, not that they didn't work. Girls Mentorship One-Days are school-year resets designed for exactly this.

How do I teach my daughter to recognize red flags and set boundaries?

Give her language and practice, not just "be careful." Talk through real scenarios, teach her that attention and trust are different things and make sure she has a trusted adult she'll actually tell. Girls Mentorship covers boundaries and red flags in camp and coaching.

Is there a leadership program for high school girls in the Phoenix area?

Yes. The Girls Mentorship Peer Leader Program lets girls 14 to 18 mentor younger campers each summer, with up to 10 verified service hours through the Leadership Lab. The Peer Leader Mastermind is a six-month leadership cohort that meets two Sundays a month.

Can my high schooler earn service hours with Girls Mentorship?

Yes. The optional Leadership Lab ($99) for Peer Leaders includes up to 10 verified service hours, a certificate of completion and a letter of recommendation.

What ages does Girls Mentorship serve?

Girls 10 to 18. Campers are 10 to 13 (entering 5th to 8th grade), Peer Leaders are 14 to 18 and Power Up Club serves grades 4 to 6. Girls who are 9 and mature for their age may be a fit; email [email protected].

Is Girls Mentorship therapy?

No. We're a mentorship and skill-building organization. We don't diagnose or treat, and we'll recommend licensed professionals when a girl needs that kind of support.

Does Girls Mentorship offer programs during the school year?

Yes. One-Days (starting November 2026), Power Up Club after-school programs at partner schools, Power One 1:1 coaching and the Peer Leader Mastermind all run during the school year.

Does Girls Mentorship offer 1:1 coaching for girls?

Yes. Power One is private online coaching in six-week blocks of 60-minute sessions, following the POWER curriculum.

Can Girls Mentorship come to my school, troop or team?

Yes. We run workshops for schools, Girl Scout troops, NCL chapters, sports teams and youth organizations across Arizona, and six-week Power Up Club programs on school campuses. Email [email protected].

Can I bring the Girls Mentorship curriculum to girls in my own community?

Yes. The POWER Method Facilitator Certification trains teachers, counselors, coaches, troop leaders and mentors to run POWER lessons anywhere. It's $1,997 or 3 payments of $665.

Do you offer sponsorships or scholarships?

Companies and individuals can sponsor a camper through the Girls Mentorship Foundation, a 501(c)(3). Email [email protected].

When does camp registration open and close?

Registration stays open until sessions fill. Sessions have sold out four years in a row, so we recommend enrolling during Early Bird. Summer 2027 dates:
Week 1: May 31 to June 4
Week 2: June 7 to June 11
Week 3: June 14 to June 18
Week 4: June 21 to June 25

Parent Questions: What Your Daughter Might Be Going Through

These are the questions moms ask us most, and the questions they're typing into search and AI tools late at night. Each answer gives a starting point, then shows where Girls Mentorship can help.

Friendships and Social Life

Why is my daughter being left out by her friends?

Friend groups shift a lot between ages 10 and 14 as girls figure out who they are, and being left out is one of the most common and painful parts of that. Help her name what happened without deciding it means something about her worth, then brainstorm one or two girls she could reach out to. At Girls Mentorship camp and One-Days, girls practice starting conversations and making new friends in a room built to include everyone.

My daughter has no friends at school. What should I do?

Start by listening, not fixing: ask where she feels most like herself and who she enjoys being around, even a little. Friendship is a skill she can practice, and small, low-pressure settings outside school often help. 90% of Girls Mentorship campers make new friends during camp week.

How do I help my daughter deal with a mean girl or friendship drama?

Help her separate what actually happened from the story her brain is filling in, then practice what she wants to say before the next hard moment. Girls handle drama better when they have words ready. Friendship conflict is one of the core topics in our POWER Framework.

What should I do about group chat drama?

Talk with her about what belongs in a group chat and what should be said face to face, and remind her she can leave a chat that makes her feel bad. Screenshots, exclusion and pile-ons spread fast, so a plan made in advance helps. We cover group chats, digital drama and kindness online at camp and One-Days.

My daughter's best friend dropped her. How do I help her through it?

Let her be sad first; losing a best friend is a real loss. Then help her see that some friendships are for a season, and that it doesn't mean she did something wrong. Girls Mentorship teaches girls how to handle friendship endings with grace and how to find their people.

My daughter is always trying to please her friends. How do I help?

People-pleasing usually comes from wanting to belong, so start by praising her for honest opinions, even small ones. Practice simple phrases like "I'd rather not" or "that doesn't work for me." Speaking up for herself is a skill girls practice every day at Girls Mentorship.

Confidence and Self-Talk

Why has my daughter's confidence dropped so much around age 10 to 12?

Confidence often dips as girls hit the tween years, when comparison, body changes and friendship shifts all show up at once. It's common, and it's also the best time to give her tools. Girls Mentorship programs are built for exactly this age.

My daughter is so hard on herself. How can I help her stop negative self-talk?

Help her notice the voice, then ask whether she'd say the same thing to a friend. Teaching her that she doesn't have to believe every thought is a big shift. Challenging negative self-talk is part of the Perspective and Worthiness pillars of our POWER Framework.

How do I build confidence in my shy daughter?

Shy isn't a problem to fix, and confidence doesn't mean being loud. Give her small, safe chances to try new things and let her solve problems herself instead of stepping in. At camp, shy girls build confidence through small groups, Peer Leaders and moments like the talent show, at their own pace.

My daughter won't speak up for herself. Should I speak for her?

As hard as it is, try not to. Every time we order for her, email the teacher or fix the awkward moment, she loses a chance to practice. Let her take the reps, and coach her before and after.

My daughter compares herself to everyone. What can I do?

Comparison is huge at this age, especially with social media. Help her focus on what she's good at, what she values and how far she's come. Worthiness, knowing her value isn't determined by looks, grades or likes, is one of our five POWER pillars.

My daughter is a perfectionist and melts down over mistakes. How do I help?

Show her that mistakes are part of learning by sharing your own. Praise effort and recovery, not just results. Girls Mentorship teaches girls that a mistake is something they did, not who they are.

Emotions and Behavior

My daughter gets so emotional over small things. Is this normal?

Big emotions are very normal in the tween years. Knowing how to name a feeling is different from knowing what to do with it, so help her build a few go-to ways to calm down and talk it through. If emotions seem extreme or constant, check in with her pediatrician or a licensed counselor.

Why doesn't my daughter talk to me anymore?

Pulling back is a normal part of growing up, but she still needs trusted adults. Try side-by-side time (car rides, walks, cooking) instead of face-to-face questions. Many girls open up more easily to a mentor, which is one reason Girls Mentorship exists.

My daughter says she's anxious about school or friends. What should I do?

Take it seriously, listen without rushing to fix it and help her break worries into steps she can manage. Girls Mentorship helps girls build confidence and coping tools, but we're not therapy. If anxiety is getting in the way of school, sleep or daily life, talk to her pediatrician or a licensed mental health professional.

How do I know if my daughter needs a mentor or a therapist?

A mentor helps a girl build skills and confidence; a therapist diagnoses and treats mental health concerns. If she's struggling with persistent sadness, anxiety that disrupts daily life or any thoughts of hurting herself, start with a licensed professional. Many families use both, and Girls Mentorship works well alongside professional care.

Growing Up, Pressure and Safety

How do I talk to my daughter about peer pressure?

Role-play real situations so she's practiced saying no before she needs to. Remind her she can always use you as the excuse. Ownership, taking responsibility for her own choices, is one of our five POWER pillars.

How do I help my daughter set boundaries?

Teach her that her feelings are real information and that "that made me uncomfortable" is a complete sentence. Practice with low-stakes situations first. Boundaries are a core skill at Girls Mentorship camp and in Power One coaching.

How do I teach my daughter to recognize red flags with adults or older boys?

Go beyond "stranger danger." Talk about the gray areas: the nice adult who crosses a line, attention that feels too intense, secrets she's asked to keep. Make sure she has at least one trusted adult she'll actually tell.

My daughter is obsessed with social media and her phone. What should I do?

Set clear limits together, and talk about how the feed makes her feel, not just how long she's on it. Help her notice when she's performing her life instead of living it. Girls Mentorship helps girls build a sense of self that doesn't depend on likes.

How do I prepare my daughter for middle school?

Talk through what might be different: bigger friend groups, changing classes, more independence. Help her practice introducing herself and handling awkward moments. Pursue More Summer Camp is built for girls entering 5th through 8th grade and is a great confidence boost before the school year.

My teenage daughter has no idea what she wants to do after high school. Should I worry?

No. Many teens don't know yet, and pressure to decide can make it harder. Help her explore what she values and enjoys through real experiences. The Peer Leader Program and Mastermind give high school girls leadership experience, mentors and service hours along the way.

Where can I find support for my daughter in Arizona?

Girls Mentorship, based in Scottsdale, offers summer camp, One-Days, after-school programs, 1:1 coaching and leadership programs for girls 10 to 18 across the Phoenix metro area. We're an approved Arizona ESA vendor. For mental health concerns, start with her pediatrician or a licensed counselor.
